Cherry Point Bachelor Enlisted Quarters
Built in 1941, the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point in North Carolina is the world’s largest Marine Corps Air Station, and serves as a training facility for the 2nd Marine Corps Aircraft Wing, among other units and the Naval Aviation Depot and U.S. Naval Hospital. The base covers nearly 30,000 acres and contains administration buildings, barracks and other residential lodging, maintenance buildings, and other service and dining facilities.
Quest Energy Group worked with Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) to optimize the standard design of the bachelors enlisted quarters (BEQ) housing units in an effort to meet EPAct requirements. Energy saving measures considered include use of room occupancy controls to set back air conditioning and lighting when spaces are unoccupied, various chillers, including both air and water cooled options with variable pumping, the use of dedicated boilers to eliminate the need for a steam plant, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) units, and water source heat pumps. Based on implementation of all measures and utilizing VRF units, the facility has the potential to achieve utility cost savings of nearly 35%.
