Mesa Community College Southwest Physical Sciences Building
The Mesa Community College Physical Sciences Building, located in Mesa, Arizona is a new state of the art lab and classroom building. The building has achieved LEED Gold certification as well as receiving the AIA Western Mountain Region’s Distinguished Building Award, the Arizona Masonry Guild Excellence in Masonry Architecture Award, and the Sustainable Design Award from Metal Architecture. The Technology Award from ASHRAE was also given to this building’s design.
Some of the energy efficient measures implemented include well insulated exterior walls and roofs, high performance low-e glass, efficient lighting design and daylighting, centrifugal chillers with VFDs, and the exhaust system was designed so that the amount of hood usage would meet the required ventilation rate for the occupants with CO2 sensors monitoring the indoor air quality at all times. A 12 kW photovoltaic system is on site and will produce approximately 22,500 kWh annually.
Through the careful planning of the energy efficient features, this building has achieved approximately 35% energy cost savings over ASHRAE 2004 standards. Quest was responsible for the LEED energy modeling.
